Sports and Public Health Economics: Costs and Benefits

Abstract

This paper explores the intricate relationship between sports and public health economics, focusing on the analysis of costs and benefits associated with sports participation and promotion. The costs encompass not only the monetary investments required for infrastructure, equipment, and personnel but also the opportunity costs related to time spent on sports rather than other activities. Conversely, the benefits are multifaceted, including improvements in physical fitness, mental health, and social cohesion. The study employs economic models and empirical data to evaluate the net economic impact of sports programs on public health. It is concluded that while sports can present significant economic and health benefits, they also demand careful planning and allocation of resources to ensure they are cost-effective and sustainable.
